Onitsha Inferno: Engr. Onunkwo visits market, doles out 2.5m in support of fire victims

    Oil magnet and philanthropist, Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo earlier today visited Ochanja market, Onitsha to identify and pledge support to the victims of the ill-fated disaster that maimed lives and destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

    Engr. Onunkwo who in company of Big Brother Naija’s Frodd toured the affected areas in market, expressed sadness over the disaster.

    Describing Onitsha as the nerve center of business in Nigeria, the APC Party stalwart advised the traders to imbibe core values of Health, Safety and Environment(HSE) in their enterprise.

    In his words, “Every union in this market should always imbibe HSE as a culture. Every month, you engage in Fire drill and equally make sure the environment is neat. Our people should equally imbibe preventive and predictive maintenance. We shouldn’t do more of correction maintenance but the aforementioned.

    “We are not just here to sympathize with you all but also preach HSE as a core value to forestall future reoccurrence”.

    The Oil and Gas Safety expert equally called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to be alive in their duties stressing that most of the trucks and trailers ply the roads at nights with just one headlight.

    “The Road safety corps should look inwards. All these trailers carrying inflammable materials should operate at 100% road worthiness”, he stated.

    The humanitarian on behalf of his foundation, the Johnbosco Onunkwo Foundation donated the sum of two million naira to the traders and equally promised to assist in renovating the affected plazas.

    Engr. Onunkwo also visited the hospitalized victims at Toronto hospital where he donated the sum of five hundred thousand naira for their treatment and upkeep.

    In his emotion laden remark, the coordinator of Emordi Shoes and Bags Dealers Association, Mr. Cosmas Chinedu appreciated Engr. Onunkwo for his benevolence while calling on other well meaning individuals to come to their aid and help them get back on their feet.
